(22 October 2013 – Hong Kong) New World Department Store China Limited (“NWDS” or the “Company”; Hong Kong stock code: 825), one of the largest owners and operators of department stores in the PRC, has successfully completed its signature nationwide environmental activity, “Green Mid-Autumn Festival- Moon Cake Box Recycling Campaign”, which was held for the third consecutive year during the Mid-Autumn Festival period from 17 to 30 September 2013. With enhanced online promotion, this year’s campaign received enthusiastic support from customers and collected a total of around 3,500 moon cake boxes, successfully implanting green living concepts in the public.

To encourage customers’ participation, shopping privileges were specially offered. For instance, when donating a metal moon cake box or two paper moon cake boxes, customers were given a moon cake box donation coupon, which they could use to redeem a cash coupon or small gift in the next purchase. This year, the Company especially made use of NWDS CSR Weibo platform to foster the promotion of the campaign. The result was very encouraging as many enquiries and feedbacks were received online regarding the campaign details. All moon cake boxes collected from customers have been sent to recyclers for further processing and the proceeds gathered have been donated to local charitable organizations, such as Red Cross Society of Changsha, Chongqing Green Leaf Volunteers Association and Blue Angel Charity Fund. As in the past, Wuhan New World Department Store - Wuchang Branch Store and Wuhan New World Department Store - Hanyang Branch Store bought stationeries for the kindergarten children in need with the proceeds while Harbin New World Department Store donated the proceeds to the broken Songhua River primary school in town.

Apart from fostering environmental protection, the stores have organized various thematic green activities to create a rich festival atmosphere, so as to raise customers’ awareness on the campaign. For instance, Harbin New World Department Store launched the Green Craft DIY Workshop and displayed themed board to share green-related information and be served as a photo-shooting spot for customers at the same time. Hong Kong New World Department Store - Shanghai Huaihai Branch Store organized Snowy Moon Cake Making Workshop for parents and their children. Being different from the traditional moon cake, non-baked snowy moon cake is a healthy alternative with no lotus seed paste as filling and oil glaze on top. The workshop did not only enhance parent-child relationship, but also promote healthy lifestyle effectively.

Ms. Rebecca Woo, Director, Corporate Affairs and Chairman of Sustainability Steering Committee of NWDS said, “NWDS has been organized the“Green Mid-Autumn Festival- Moon Cake Box Recycling Campaign” for the third consecutive year and collected around 18,500 moon cake boxes accumulatively. The campaign has received wide recognition for reducing environmental pollution while promoting green shopping and low-carbon living. In addition to the increased traffic and sales, we are delighted to see more people increasing their awareness and participation level in the campaign. For instance, stores started to receive enquiries about the campaign before the launch this year, implying that the campaign has successfully nurtured customers’ green living habits. We will continue to organize diverse green activities to widespread the green messages to staff and the public, so as to play a part in caring for the Earth.”
