NWDS has been actively involved in social welfare activities and has participated in a large number of charitable events taking place in Mainland China and Hong Kong. The Group’s effort has been widely endorsed by our customers and the public, and was repeatedly awarded the “Caring Company” logo.
In anticipation of the Beijing Olympics 2008, the Group pitched in and rendered full support by organizing a series of activities under the theme of "We Are Ready" from April to July. The activities included gymnastic competition, badminton tournament, karaoke contest and standard English quiz. In addition, as a representative of Olympics volunteers, Beijing Trendy Store participated in the swear-in ceremony of "Olympics Volunteering by Beijing Business Services" organized by Beijing Bureau of Commerce on 26 June, pledging municipal service for the Olympic Games along with other volunteers.
Massive earthquakes struck Sichuan on 12 May 2008. Pitching in on disaster relief, NWDS mobilized over 30 stores in 17 cities for a host of joint relief efforts. Charity sales, donation of sales proceeds and blood donation stations and donation boxes were set up at our stores nationwide. In addition, we transported relief supplies to devastated areas and co-organized subsidized education. Our staff at stores also initiated internal fundraising. RMB 860,000 collected was subsequently donated to Chengdu Red Cross. Besides, Chengdu New World Department Store organized an earthquake victims consolation gathering to raise funds for staff affected and their families.
New World Department Store was the key sponsor for "MSF Day" for the first time in 2007. In 2008, NWDS once again supported this charitable cause and became the key sponsor for "MSF Day 2008", demonstrated our support to the organization's humanitarian work. The kick-off ceremony of the event was held at City Walk, Tsuen Wan on 20 April 2008. With the slogan of "Let's Donate a Day's Income and Volunteer for MSF", guests from different walks of life urged the public to donate a day's income to support the frontline medical relief work of MSF.
Amblyopia, a common ailment around the world, afflicted over 10 million children in China. NWDS jointly organized “Bright Future Action- A New World for Children with Amblyopia” with China Children and Teenagers’ Fund to extend this charity project from Hong Kong to cities in Mainland China. The year-long project programme kicked off on 16 November 2007 at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People. All NWDS stores served as activity platforms for promotion and dissemination of knowledge on amblyopia. Donation boxes were placed in store to raise fund for needy children.
"The 7.30 MSF Day" was unveiled in May 2007 with the slogan of "Let's Donate a Day's Income and Volunteer for MSF", the organization invited the public to donate a day's income to support the worldwide medical relief work of MSF. It was generously supported by over ten thousand citizens in the territory, in which 229 public, private companies and the government departments (16 of them were government departments and donors) had participated. Until 30 July 2007, the event raised more than HK$ 4 million. As the key sponsor of the event, NWDS has raised HK$300,000, together with the donations raised by the New World Group, a sum of $520,000 was raised from the whole Group. In 2007, more than 2,000 staff members responded with donations in support of the MSF Day. New World Group thus became the corporation with the highest number of participants. At the same time, the Group was the top corporate fundraiser for MSF Day for the second consecutive year. The Group would continue to collaborate with MSF to care for those who are sick and unfortunate.
